The reel history
Charles Fey invented the first slot machine in 1891, named the Liberty Bell. He created a machine that would allow automatic payouts. The machine featured three reels and five symbols; hearts, diamonds, spades, horseshoes and a Liberty Bell.

The highest payout was awarded for three bell symbols, which is why the machine was named the Liberty Bell. It gained huge popularity, and without a patent, it wasn’t long before others copied Fey’s design.

The demand for Liberty Bell slot machines was huge, and Fey could not build them fast enough in his small shop. Gambling supply manufacturers tried to buy the manufacturing and distribution rights to the Liberty Bell, however, Charles Fey refused to sell.

As a result of this, in 1907, Herbert Mills, a manufacturer of arcade machines, began production of a slot machine, a knock-off of Fey’s Liberty Bell, called the Operator Bell. Mills was the first person to place fruit symbols: i.e. lemons, plums, and cherries on machines.

The machines at this time were made from cast iron and there were three metal hoops – the reels. Each reel had ten symbols painted on them and they were spun by the user pulling on a metal lever at the side of the machine.

Technology in Slots
Although the classic design was loved by many, gaming designers could see the machine needed updating, because the technology was progressing rapidly.

In 1964, the first fully electromechanical slot called Money Honey was released. The reels were operated entirely electrically, yet the game was still started by pulling the lever. This was the first slot machine with a bottomless hopper, which enabled it to make an automatic payout of up to 500 coins. The success of this game led to the increasing dominance of electromechanical Slots.

Virtual Reality
Now, Slots have progressed even further, with the introduction of virtual reality (VR). This tech triumph allows players to put on a VR headset and play Slots as though they are there in person. Spinning the reels has really never been easier!

It’s not just VR developments, but also improvements in the music, graphics and designs, which all go into the creation of a great slot game. If you compare the first design, to the video Slots we see now, there are some really jaw-dropping changes!

Not to mention the introduction of online gaming, meaning you can play your favourite casino games from the comfort of your own home.
